How much is Statutory Paternity Pay in 2026/27?
SPP is paid at £184.03 per week (or 90% of average weekly earnings if lower) for up to 2 weeks. From April 2026, fathers have day-1 eligibility rights under new employment reforms.
When can I take paternity leave?
From April 2026, you can take paternity leave from day 1 of employment. Leave must be taken within 52 weeks of the birth or adoption placement. You can take 1 week, 2 consecutive weeks, or 2 separate weeks.
Can I take paternity leave in separate weeks?
Yes, from April 2024 you can split your 2 weeks of paternity leave into two separate 1-week blocks, taken at different times within 52 weeks of the birth.
Do I qualify for Statutory Paternity Pay?
To qualify for SPP you must: be an employee (not self-employed), give correct notice, earn at least £123/week on average, and be the biological father, mother's partner, or adopter. From April 2026, there's no minimum service requirement.
Is paternity pay taxable?
Yes, Statutory Paternity Pay is subject to Income Tax and National Insurance, just like your normal wages. It counts towards your annual taxable income.
