What is a P11D and why do I need one?

A P11D is a form employers submit to HMRC listing taxable benefits and expenses provided to employees. You receive a copy showing benefits you've received, which affects your tax liability. You'll pay tax on the cash equivalent value of these benefits.

How are benefits in kind taxed?

Benefits are added to your taxable income and taxed at your marginal rate. A £5,000 benefit costs a basic rate taxpayer £1,000 in tax (20%), while a higher rate taxpayer pays £2,000 (40%). Your employer also pays Class 1A NI at 15%.

What is the van benefit for 2026/27?

The company van benefit is a flat rate of £3,960 for 2026/27. If your employer also provides fuel for private use, there's an additional fuel benefit of £757, making a total of £4,717.

How is company car tax calculated?

Company car tax = List price × BIK percentage × Your tax rate. The BIK percentage depends on CO2 emissions (5% for electric, up to 37% for high emissions). For example, a £40,000 car with 30% BIK rate costs a 40% taxpayer £4,800/year in tax.

Are all benefits taxable?

Most benefits are taxable, but some are exempt: pension contributions, cycle-to-work schemes (up to £1,000), workplace parking, mobile phones (one per employee), and employer-provided childcare vouchers (if joined before October 2018).
