What is the HMRC mileage rate for 2026/27?
The HMRC approved mileage allowance payment (AMAP) rate for cars is 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles and 25p per mile thereafter. Motorcycles are 24p per mile and bicycles are 20p per mile.
Can I claim tax relief on mileage?
Yes, if your employer pays you less than the HMRC-approved mileage rate, you can claim tax relief on the difference. This is known as Mileage Allowance Relief (MAR).
What counts as a business mile?
Business miles are journeys made for work purposes that are not part of your ordinary commute. This includes travel between workplaces, visiting clients, or going to a temporary workplace.
Is commuting considered business mileage?
No, travel from home to your permanent workplace (commuting) is not considered business mileage and cannot be claimed. However, travel to temporary workplaces may qualify.
