Frequently Asked Questions
What is Gift Aid and how does it work?
Gift Aid is a UK tax scheme that allows charities to reclaim the basic rate tax (20%) on your donation, adding 25p to every £1 you give at no cost to you. If you're a higher or additional rate taxpayer, you can claim back the difference between your tax rate and basic rate through Self Assessment.
How much does Gift Aid add to my donation?
Gift Aid adds 25% to your donation. For every £1 you donate, the charity receives £1.25. On a £100 donation, the charity gets £125. This is because charities reclaim the basic rate tax (20%) that's already been paid on the money you earned.
Can I claim Gift Aid tax relief myself?
If you're a basic rate taxpayer, the charity gets the benefit and you don't claim anything extra. If you're a higher rate (40%) taxpayer, you can claim back 20% of the gross donation. Additional rate (45%) taxpayers can claim back 25%. Claim through Self Assessment.
What donations qualify for Gift Aid?
Most cash donations to UK registered charities qualify if you've paid enough UK tax. Donations from buying raffle tickets, charity auctions, or goods from charity shops don't qualify. Regular donations, one-off gifts, and sponsorship money all qualify.
Do I pay enough tax to use Gift Aid?
You must have paid at least as much UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax as all the Gift Aid claimed on your donations. If you donate £80, the charity claims £20 Gift Aid, so you need to have paid at least £20 in tax that year.
