Frequently Asked Questions
What is the rateable value?
The rateable value is an estimate of your property's open market rental value on a specific date, set by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). It's used as the basis for calculating your business rates bill.
What is Small Business Rate Relief?
If your business uses only one property with a rateable value below £15,000, you may be eligible for Small Business Rate Relief. Properties with RV up to £12,000 get 100% relief (no rates to pay). Properties with RV between £12,001-£15,000 get tapered relief.
What is the business rates multiplier?
The multiplier is set by the government each year. For 2026/27, the standard multiplier is 54.6p and the small business multiplier is 49.9p. This is multiplied by your rateable value to calculate your gross rates.
Can I appeal my rateable value?
Yes, you can challenge your rateable value if you believe it's wrong. This is done through the VOA's Check, Challenge, Appeal process. Common reasons include errors in the property details or comparable properties having lower values.
