Eligibility for Blind Person's Allowance

You can claim Blind Person's Allowance if you're registered as blind or severely sight impaired with your local authority.

In England and Wales: You must be on your local authority's register of blind persons.

In Scotland and Northern Ireland: You need a certificate from an ophthalmologist stating you're blind.

The allowance is in addition to your Personal Allowance and reduces your taxable income.

Transferring Unused Allowance

If your income is too low to use all of your Blind Person's Allowance, you can transfer the unused part to your spouse or civil partner.

This can be beneficial if your partner pays tax but you don't earn enough to use the full allowance.

To transfer, contact HMRC or apply online through your Personal Tax Account.
